The magnificent ship was the first to reach the coast of eastern Australia and the only European ship to visit New Zealand since the Heemskerk captained by Abel Tasman 127 years earlier. HMS Endeavour then navigated the tricky route around the Cape of Good Hope and returned to its home port of Dover in July 1771.
